Delivering World-Class Care to Children around the Globe

Children’s National Health System’s world‐class physicians, nurses, and researchers provide the highest quality clinical care to patients at our main campus in Washington, DC, serving children from throughout the country and worldwide. In addition, our diverse range of programs—direct patient care, cutting‐edge research, telemedicine, international collaborations, and distance learning—improve the lives of children worldwide. The following overview is a summary of Children’s National’s global reach and impact.

AN INTERNATIONAL PROGRAM DELIVERING THE HIGHEST‐QUALITY PEDIATRIC CARE

With orthopaedics, hematology, oncology, ophthalmology, and plastic surgery divisions that rank among the best in the world, Children’s National stands as a premier destination and a beacon of hope for families around the globe. Over the past five years, our International Program has coordinated services for more than 1,300 families seeking treatment. These young patients represent a remarkable 30 countries, including the UAE, China, Czech Republic, South Africa, and many nations in between.

CONDUCTING PEDIATRIC HEALTHCARE RESEARCH ON A GLOBAL STAGE

The Children's Research Institute and the Sheikh Zayed Institute for Pediatric Surgical Innovation—two key components of Children’s National—allow us to translate research findings directly to clinical care. Our goal is as simple as it is ambitious: to save and improve children’s lives, today and in the future. The Sheikh Zayed Institute was established in 2009 with a $150 million gift from the Government of Abu Dhabi, the largest contribution ever made toward pediatric surgery. The scale of this investment has allowed us to attract some of the world’s leading physicians and researchers, who are working together to make surgery more precise, less invasive and pain‐free for children everywhere. Recent innovations include a state‐of‐the‐art pediatric pain clinic, with breakthrough devices specific to children's unique physiology and video game technology to promote rehabilitation. These efforts complement the work of the Children’s Research Institute, one of the top pediatric research institutions in terms of funding from the National Institutes of Health. The groundbreaking research and innovative techniques pioneered by our researchers help our physicians rapidly translate scientific advancements to their patients, while also benefiting children far beyond the hospital’s walls.

INCREASING THE CAPACITY OF PEDIATRIC HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONALS THROUGH TELEMEDICINE

Through state‐of‐the‐art telemedicine technology, we are able to share our doctors’ expertise and build international partnerships with more than 100 hospital and university partners in more than 14 countries, including the UAE, China, Egypt, Germany, Guam, Korea, Saudi Arabia, Uganda, Ukraine, and Vietnam. Our telemedicine team designs, develops, and executes strategies to improve access to care and health outcomes for children. Working across a wide range of pediatric subspecialties, including neurology, genetics, radiology, and general surgery, the program provides more than 1,500 consults each year spanning five continents. Fifteen of our doctors now have in‐home telemedicine systems, enabling Children’s National to provide 24/7 coverage for emergency situations that arise anywhere in the world. Our distance learning initiatives are also removing barriers to care and creating international opportunities for medical providers' professional growth.
