I joined the team at Children's National 3 weeks before we transitioned to virtual work; then, less than a year after joining the team, I got a call from our pediatrician that changed everything. I was now no longer just an employee of Children's, but now my family was experiencing the care first-hand.
On January 20, 2021, Wes (then 2) was diagnosed with b-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Through a two-and-a-half year course of treatment, nurses and doctors have taken the time to sit with Wes on the floor and play dinosaurs, chase him down the hall, integrate him into his care by letting him direct stethoscopes and push / pull syringes of fluid into his port. They have listened to and cared for our whole family as we processed a whole range of emotions and expectations.
On June 14, 2023 Wes reached the end of his treatment protocol, 875 days of treatment.
Now, one year from this milestone, Wes still goes to oncology every other month to ensure he's growing strong and that the leukemia hasn't returned. We're also now supported by the neuropsychology team, who monitors his cognitive development, which could be impacted by the chemo that saved his life.
Please consider showing some love for the incredible doctors, nurses and child life teams that care for kids just like Wes every day with a generous donation to our team!
Thank you,
Kate
