Many people may not know our journey with Oren, but due to complications during delivery he was immediately med-evaced to Children's National Hospital for brain cooling, a process to stop and prevent further brain damage caused from a lack of oxygen and blood flow during birth (also known as hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) - say that three times fast). After several days of controlled hypothermia, rewarming and a MRI, we were given the best prognosis we could have asked for - a happy and healthy baby. And now he is a thriving, hilarious, hellacious and CHARMING newly 3 year old. How thankful we are! We truly don't know what situation we'd be in if it weren't for his care at Children's National (the #1 NICU in the country), but we can so thankfully say we're in in the throes of a normal threenager stage.

And that's why we are now lifelong supporters of Team NICU Brainy Kids, a group that has supported clinical research including the brain cooling program we benefited from, brain protection trials, neonatal seizures, hemimegaloencephaly program, and neonatal strokes.
