Our team's Walk/Run Race is dedicated to Anelys Beras our Mighty Miracle who was in the NICU for 10 months and now is a walking miracle. When you register on our page, you will be helping patients and families in similar situations, as this journey was extremely difficult. Thanks to Childrens National's amazing care team she is now cruising, taking her first steps, and standing tall. Remarkably, she has been without oxygen support for almost 5 months!

Anelys was born at just 22 weeks and 6 days gestation, weighing a mere 1 pound and 3 ounces. This tiny but mighty miracle faced numerous challenges from the start. She battled feeding intolerance, a serious blood infection, and required abdominal surgery, which resulted in her having an ostomy bag for 8 weeks. At the 8-week mark, Anelys took a turn for the worse, becoming critically ill due to bleeding at the ostomy site. She needed repeated transfusions of blood, platelets, and plasma, and became so swollen that she couldn’t open her eyes.

Throughout this time, Anelys remained intubated due to her premature lungs, leading to diagnoses of Chronic Lung Disease and Pulmonary Hypertension. After several weeks of uncertainty, she made a full and complete recovery, allowing her to return to the OR to close the ostomy. Soon after, she was extubated, and despite an initial failure, she was extubated again and never needed the breathing tube again.

Talk of discharge soon followed, and Anelys was able to go home with her family, where she has been thriving ever since.
