Our family has long admired the work of Children's National, which is at the forefront of the most excellent and innovative care for kids in the country and world. We now feel the effects of their work more personally. Our sweet, funny, sassy, and smart 1-year-old daughter/niece/granddaughter/great-granddaughter, Maya, received a "brain cooling" treatment hours after she was born with a brain injury. This treatment was developed in clinical research at Children's and other hospitals, and provided to us the kind of life-saving care that shone a light during a dark and scary time.
Maya was, and continues to be, treated at Georgetown Hospital where she - and all of us - receive comprehensive and compassionate care. She also attends a follow-up "cooling" clinic at Children's. With overwhelming gratitude to both institutions, we are participating in the Race for Every Child on the Brainy Kids team in the hopes of contributing to medical discoveries that turn on new lights for more families in their own moments of darkness.
We're biased, but we think "cool" kids are, in fact, the coolest, so we're running to honor the inspiring strength they have shown from their earliest moments.
