The ANNUAL STEPHEN MONACO CHARITY GOLF EVENT to benefit Children's National Hospital was created by Tom and Jana Monaco in 2015 to celebrate the birthday of a special boy whose life touches many. Due to a late diagnosis of a rare metabolic disorder, isovaleric acidemia, their son Stephen suffered a severe brain injury at age 3 ½ resulting in significant disabilities and medical issues... preventable had he benefited from comprehensive newborn screening at birth. All babies now benefit thanks to changes in NBS laws nationwide impacted by Stephen's life.
Come and celebrate Stephen turning 27 with the 9th annual event to support “THE STEPHEN MONACO NUTRITION AND GENETICS FUND” of the Division of Genetics and Metabolism in the Rare Disease Institute at Children’s National. This fund was developed to improve life for others living with similar rare metabolic disorders. Rare disorders like Stephen's and his sister Caroline affect approximately 1 in 250,000 births and require the highly specialized expertise of the specialists and their team in genetics for their care. To date, we have raised nearly one million dollars for this amazing group of specialists thanks to many kind hearts and generous donations. We are grateful to each and every one of you and hope to see you on October 25th!
The mission of the Stephen Monaco Nutrition and Genetics Fund is to improve the lives of children and adults living with rare inborn errors of metabolism. There are three key areas vital to the lifelong health for these patients and continued advancement in the management and care of these inborn errors of metabolism supported by this fund. They include services of the metabolic nutrition program, patient education and metabolic nutrition research in the Children’s National Rare Disease Institute.
