About the Program

Poor dental hygiene is robbing children in the greater Washington, D.C. metro area. A simple toothache — something easily treatable — can prevent a child from eating properly, or sleeping at night, and may even lead to tooth deformities or loss in later adult life. More than 51 million hours of school are being missed annually nationwide due to unhealthy mouths, and here in D.C. we have a shortage of dental health professionals to fight this.

The Kohl's Cares Community Dental Program — funded by Kohl's and staffed by Children's National Health System — brings dentists right to kids most in need. Partnering with schools in the District of Columbia and Prince George's County, mobile dentist offices on wheels drive up to schools — providing treatment and education on-site. Nationally recognized professionals not only provide care for children who may otherwise go untreated, but work with teachers and school officials to help build effective classroom curriculum teaching children how to stay healthy.
